Plays We Love is a chance to spotlight our ‘staff picks’ of new Canadian/Turtle Island plays. My choice for January is Nam Nguyen’s brilliant, audacious play, A Perfect Bowl of Pho. I love how Nam plays with form. Scenes shift from a dancing soup number to a Toronto university audition room, to a high school student and her mom preparing a school presentation on the subject of pho, to the man who created the first bowl of pho, to a first date…all woven together around the subject of pho, and Nam’s relationship to pho, while playfully asking what is the theatrical form that best captures the nature of pho? I laughed, and gasped, as surprise after surprise arrived – sheer delight from page to page. – Lois
